Joe Strummer’s London Calling radio show

The world lost a true musical treasure when Joe Strummer passed suddenly in 2002.  Not only was he the frontman for seminal late 70s heroes the Clash, paving the way for melody and political activism in punk for many a generation to follow, as well as a later solo artist and with the Mescaleros, but he was also a man with an eclectic musical taste and vision.

This is evidenced perhaps nowhere better than on the 8 episodes of the London Calling radio program aired by BBC World Service from 1999-2002.  With guests including Julien Temple and Tom Morello, Joe’s one-man musical vision ranges from punk to folk to world music and back again. All narrated by our gravelly-voiced hero.  Below is the official link, followed by one from Radio Clash – on pirate satellite, as you might imagine.

RIP, brother.

Beck w/ Flaming Lips ‘Cold Brains’

“In 2002, along with the release of the milder, morose Sea Change, Beck asked the Flaming Lips to be his backing band.” Here’s a live version of ‘Cold Brains’ from the KCRW Session. This is what happens when you get really creative with what was already a great song!
