Sharkula, Chicago’s greatest rapper

Anyone who knows me, knows I sometimes have a tendency to go off topic. I mean, this is a health blog, and here I am posting about a rapper.
It’s a crazy world. Maybe it’s Trump’s Plan.
But, I am because Sharkula is a special dude. If you live in Chicago, or even if you’ve just visited, you’ve probably come across this guy on the streets of the city.

A lot of people loved him on the classic TV show Chicagogo. Maybe you’ve heard him collaborating with the famous Kool Keith. He released a rare vinyl LP “The Diagnosis of Sharkula” on The Secret Life of Sound.

Life Support – North Carolina Hardcore circa 98

Life Support was a Winston-Salem, NC band that existed long enough to record a demo and a 7″, and a couple of compilation tracks (notably a cover of Judge’s ‘Like You’ and their brother WSHC band Line Drive’s ‘Driftnet’).  In this track ‘Biosphere’ the band took a stand lyrically against deforestation and environmental degradation against a furious backdrop of classic hardcore angst.  Let the mosh wash over you as your start a circle pit in your domicile or cubicle. 1234!

Featuring former members of Naked Angels, Line Drive, Fall Without Fear, Shatterhed and other local bands the group was extremely active if somewhat short-lived.  Opening for bands like Code Seven, the group brought hardcore into a whole new era by rediscovering the past. Someone needs to keep these corporations in check, because we’re not treating our home with any respect!

The Secret Life of High Top Blues

This clip comes to us from the forthcoming Mormon Freegan documentary The Secret Life of TSLOS, which documents the semi-fictional record label and hip-hop/noise collective The Secret Life of Sound.

It is difficult to say precisely what the message behind “High Top Blues” was when it dropped on the Chronic Argonauts compilation in 2009.  Clearly a love of hip-hop is the prevailing theme, without regard for whether it is “old school” or “new school, or regardless of where it hails from.  What we can surmise is that 5 years ago people were REALLY into shoes.  Me, I’ve been wearing Chuck Taylors since I was like 6, but certain designs do make your mouth water.

RIP Benny Carter (1943-2014) American self-taught visual artist

My cousin Benny Carter was truly one of a kind. Binford Taylor (Benny) Carter Jr. died unexpectedly February 2, 2014, at his home near Mayodan, N.C

In his obituary in the Greenboro News & Record they noted “Benny began painting in 1991 after he was laid off from his job. He soon made a name for himself in the national and international art world. His paintings, decorative birdhouses, clocks, totems, metal sculptures and other works are what some people call outsider art or folk art. Benny preferred the term self-taught artist. His works ranged from finely detailed miniatures to large yard-art pieces. He often used found objects in his art. A favorite theme was the New York City skyline and waterfront, often with the Statue of Liberty. He also depicted Biblical stories and farm scenes. A number of his works include the words “Buy Art.””

Here’s one of his works called “Center of the Universe”

His art was a testament to the idea that, in life, you have to follow your own vision.  And always pay attention to details!

This one is titled “Big Apple”.

Final Offering 1987

Featuring Mike Dean from Corrosion of Conformity and Wiliam Duvall (of Alice in Chain, MC5, and Neon Christ, among other great things) it really shouldn’t surprise anyone that this 1987 video clip is amazing. Even with the crazy low quality sound of this video, and the apparent lack of vocals in the mix. Ah well, real deal artifacts from history come at a price.  Bottomline; this is incredibly awesome. William Duvall – guitar, Randy Gue-vocals, Mike Dean-bass, Greg Psomas-drums (RIP).
